In December 2019, the super red giant star Betelgeuse caught the attention of astronomers. A strong decrease in brightness was interpreted as potential first signs of an imminent supernova. Do we know more now?
To illustrate how densely populated a country is, we generally divide the population by the total area. Recently, I was shown another metric to measure the population density: The population weighted density (PWD). It encapsulates at which density an average inhabitant of a country lives. Using data from worldpop we can look at interesting aspects for the population distribution in Europe.
Astrophysical Interferometers are complex instruments. Properly understanding how the visibilities, which the interferometer measures, relate to the intensity of a source on the sky is a challeng. The following tool simulates such an observation. By changing the observational parameters, you can see how it changes the resulting image in real-time.
